Review

“I love that “Amanda’s Big Dream” promotes young people being involved in sports and following their dreams through an active and healthy lifestyle.”
Jason Brown- 2015 US Figure Skating Champion, 2014 US Olympic Bronze Medalist, Team Figure Skating

“This inspiring story and it’s beautiful pictures should be required reading in every child’s home, classroom, and pediatrician’s waiting room. All kids will be moved as Amanda realizes that who she is should never be limited or defined by her size and shape. This book teaches children that staying true to themselves, caring for, and taking care of their health and well-being is the way to a happy ending. Bravo to Matz and Patch for this much needed jewel of a book!”
Kathy Kater, LICSW—Psychotherapist, Consultant, and Author

“Parents want to raise children who are healthy and happy, and Amanda’s Big Dream supports that goal. Amanda’s Big Dream is a beautifully illustrated resource for children and parents struggling with harmful dieting messages and weight bullying. This book actively challenges common and harmful myths about weight, and supports healthy behaviors. Amanda’s Big Dream is a rare resource from a trusted professional that helps children understand that health and happiness is about far more than a number on a scale.”
Katja Rowell, MD- Childhood Feeding Specialist and Author

“I love this book. It says everything it has to say. All the hurtful words and ideas are there, the real impediments created by high body weight (can’t bend as far) the child’s impulse to lose weight is there, but what is SO different is the way Amanda’s parents and doctor react. They give her the exact, reality based support that she needs, and she becomes a stronger person for it.”
Ellyn Satter, MS, RDN, MSSW, and author

A MUST READ for anyone who works with, has, or spends time with children!!!
By Debbie
The message we send out to children should be one of encouragement and belief in oneself. As the mom of three daughters and someone in the helping profession, I was so excited to read Amanda’s Big Dream! Finally a message that empowers girls (and boys) to strive for healthy lifestyles while explaining that people come in all sizes! I think this book will help children identify what it takes to have a healthy body, and will help parents understand how to have those conversations with their children without letting society’s unhealthy view of thinness weigh them down! I’ve already shared it with my daughters and hope others will too. And the illustrations...a work of art and love on every page!

A very uplifting and inspiring book!
By Linda Bacon
What a sweet story! It's a shame that there's so much weight stigma in our culture, and this book offers a fun and positive way to start conversations with children. We can show kids that there are more respectful ways to view bodies, that they can follow their dreams in whatever body they have, and that self-care is nourishing in and of itself, not something to be undertaken for weight control. This is a “feel good” kind of book, with great messages about body respect, eating well, honoring emotions… Oh – and the lovely illustrations drew me in too.

A Great Resource for Children, Parents, Coaches and Communities!
By Michelle Pitman
I am thrilled to see a book now available that thoughtfully covers the topic of kids, sport and body image. Having children ages 5 and 7 that participate in sport, I see the critical importance of cultivating a positive body image and detaching the value placed on an ideal size or shape for success in sports and/or overall health. It is so refreshing to see a more positive alternative, that guides readers towards a more holistic view on living life and going after your dreams no matter your size.

I would recommend Amanda's Big Dream to anyone looking to create a more inclusive environment within sport and their communities, as well as lessening the pressure that kids (and adults) feel towards having to be a certain weight/shape in order to fit in and be successful. It's time we shifted the conversation towards life-enhancing behaviours, as opposed to focusing on body measurements, for true health and happiness to be achieved. Amanda's Big Dream offers that starting point.
