It really helps focus you to examine your thoughts

Just finished the last day but not done with the book. Doing all these exercises seems to have changed my way of thinking about eating. I had started a healthier eating program and found it easier to go with it once I put it together with this book.often, when I was getting stuck or obstinate, something in just that day's notes would address my mood. I suggest you give it a try, commit to even a week and see the change happening.

Might Be Burning Fat on Day 4 - High Hopes

This book, "The Easy Way to Lose Weight and Stay Thin Forever", was a pleasant surprise.

I had no idea that Rob Parnell was familiar with Albert Ellis and his teaching, and the tools he came up with works.

The knowledge inside this book is based on cognitive psychology as well as the author's personal experience, and he's tried the method on other people, where it also worked.

First half of the book is background story and theory, and it makes sense.

I'm on Day 4 of the 31 day plan, and there's one thing that's not clear to me about the exercises:

The five favorite foods, are they supposed to be unhealthy? Mine aren't. Well, the first, probably, but not the others. And my least favorite foods - some of them are unhealthy, and there's one of them I would never eat. No, make that two.

Also, what does "food" cover in this context - an ingredients? a meal? a snack? (I've understood it as all of these.)

I love that you're not going on a diet with this book. Yeah, focusing on what not to eat and in which amounts is a shortcut to failure. With this book you teach yourself to trust your body, and you teach your body to crave what's good for it.

A common fault in many weight loss books is to believe that fat people are fat because they eat chocolate, chips and cookies all day. I rarely eat either. I eat lean chicken when we eat meat. I eat vegetables and a little fruit. But still I'm fat. And Rob Parnell does not commit this error. He knows there can be other reasons to be fat.

Does the advice in this book work? It's too early to say, of course, because I still have 27 more days to go, but I woke up burning this morning, and that's usually a sign that I'm burning fat. We don't have a scale, though, so I'll have to rely on the mirror instead.

A truely easy way to lose wieght and keep it off.

I thought there was no way I wanted another weight loss book. I tried them all and nothing had ever worked. Sure, I lost weight but put it all back on and then some. But knowing Rob Parnell I thought I would give his a try. It surprised me to learn how different his book was from all the rest of them. His message was as plain as when he writes about writing. It is like no other weight loss book out there. I would recommend it to anyone who is serious about making healthy choices for the future. It is not a get skinny quick book, it is a change of life for the better. I say go for it, and thanks Rob for giving us an easy way to lose weight and keep it off.

Steve Ochs GED is hilarity incarnate. ...a mix of cynical, sarcastic, humorous, and vulgar... I thoroughly enjoyed this book, despite being younger and the other sex than its target audience. About the Author
Steve Ochs, GED, rose from a teenage felon to a respected stand up comic/TV writer/producer with credits spanning from network TV to HBO and Showtime. If you're the target audience for MIDMEN, you might recognize him as a comic from his appearances on Star Search (on one show he beat Martin Lawrence… whatever happened to that guy?) or as a writer from his credits on the multi Emmy-winning Rugrats. He returned to the stage in 2011 with a one man show called “Life in the Middle Ages,” which was named Best of the Hollywood Fringe and inspired the MIDMEN book, which is itself being adapted into another one man show. The high point of his career so far was having his personal hero, Richard Pryor, call him a “funny motherf*cker.”

A great, fun and informative read!

I'm a guy who likes to read but don't have a ton of patience for thick, technical self-help books. This breezed by much more like a comedy than the informative book that it really is. If you're going through, about to go through, have gone through or know someone who is at any stage of midlife crises, there's something here for you!

Ochs is funny and self-effacing, knowledgable and helpful without coming off as preachy or condescending.

Very little else to say other than, well worth the read!

The funniest, smartest, most brutally honest coping-with-midlife book you will ever read.

True this: you are either a man getting ready for your midlife crisis, or a man in the midst of your midlife crisis, or a man on the other side of your midlife crisis, or a person who knows one of these men. And given this is immutable fact of living in America at this moment in time, then it follows in the funniest way that you need to read MIDMEN: The Modern Man’s Guide to Surviving Midlife Crisis. Or you know someone who does.
For the moment, forget the fact that you should read MIDMEN because it’s flat-out hilarious. Writer, actor, producer, comedian Steve Ochs is as profane and smart and hysterical as #&*! You will be thoroughly entertained from page one to page the end. Indeed, if MIDMEN were only about making you laugh aloud, then you would have to buy it now and read it now. I’m not kidding. It’s that funny.

But as clever and clear as Ochs is, MIDMEN is much more than entertaining. It is—in its special irreverent way—enlightening. Big word, I know, but it applies to MIDMEN. I mean it.

A midlife crisis is nothing to poo-poo. It’s physically, emotional, spiritually, and intellectually debilitating—at the very least, hyper challenging. And Steve Ochs has created and written a guide to surviving it. No, that’s not it. He’s gifted all men (and the women and children who tolerate them) a way to not simply survive it but to thrive through it.

There are chapters about the spouse, the kids, the world, money, and the mind that will make your eyes shoot open with recognition, if not impending doom, even while you’re laughing. Not to worry, Ochs catches you before you hit the floor and lifts you up and dusts you and tells you how to keep on keeping on. I don’t want to go into specifics because you deserve the right to crack the #&*! up on your own. But his extended bit about your body as it ages and the ensuing grooming that necessarily follows is so cringe-worthy and hilarious that, well, read it. And you will never see Da Vinci’s Vitruvian man the same way again. Never. As in not ever. Meaning never ever again.

It’s a fabulous book. Uplifting in all the right ways despite, no, because of the holy-#&*!-I’m-really-getting-old-now subject matter. Read it for yourself. Or get it for someone who should be reading it. Just get it.

May be good for Laughter but lacks the Usefulness and the Depth!

I purchased this book reading the other ratings and the comments. But unfortunately, this book doesn't come at par with any of them, not even nearer!

Too much of Slang all over is a huge turn off for any well-cultured person. It might create laughter in a Stand-up comedy shows, but in a book, that doesn't seem to be digestible.

I couldn't find the book interesting or useful, either. I just dragged it till the 33-odd % of the book, and then literally had to forgive myself for not reading any further and stopped punishing myself by continuing to read the book.

I guess the Depth is lacking in the book. Insufficient homework or lack of depth or inability to decide the Core-Plot/Core-Message of the book might be the culprits for the failure of this book!

I really was looking for a really, really helpful book on the Midlife Crisis and had a lot of hopes from this book (reading the reviews)..., but alas..., I'll need to research further for a good book on the subject matter!

An excellent guide to 25 weight loss tips and super foods

I came across this book while looking for a solid nutritional guide. I am not so much interested in losing weight as effectively maintaining a healthy weight. So that I can stay flexible and active for as long as possible, particularly considering that I'm dealing with a severe physical disability. Being flexible and lightweight and healthy makes it much easier to get around as well as enjoy a fairly active (again, considering my disability) lifestyle and if I was to gain too much excess weight that my opportunities for adventure would be severely limited. This book is interesting because it explains why and how people build up fat in the first place, as well as listing super foods that have been proven to limit the body's fat, as well as help build muscles and maintain joint flexibility to 25 tips in this book are definitely worth having and was very interested to hear about the lemon diet. Apparently, the lemon diet has been around for a little while. And I've simply been a touch. I was not aware that these sour pieces of fruit were now considered to be a super food. Overall I am very satisfied with my purchase of this book, and I'm sure it will be useful in developing or adding to my daily health and exercise routine.

teaching the essentials

Though this book will not provide a weight loss program to abide by, it gives the essential superfood that would be incorporated into a healthy and longstanding diet. I learned a lot in the food section, particularly regarding beans and it inspired me to do some side research about the various types of beans and cooking times. The author has a last section talking about different type of physical activities that can be implemented to ward off a sedentary lifestyle. As mentioned before, the food section is awesome and had all the basic information to assess what I want to have in a balanced meal. I boil most of my food, so that makes it easier. Great book for the essentials.

This book helps me a lot to understand good food for body and soul which will help me losing weight through different physical activities. This book is nicely composed and talks about 25 Weight loss tips which is very helpful in losing weight without doing any extra effort.

I highly recommend this book if you are seriously looking for Weight Loss in least effort.

I found this book very disappointing. I am a long-time water aerobics instructor and I am always looking for new exercises. Nothing here. This book spends a lot of time talking about what you should do, but never really says how to do it. Wish I hadn't bought it. Wasted money.

If you have parents who need hearing aids, this book is for you!

We've been struggling with my Mother for some time over her hearing issues. She hasn't been able to hear us and so communication was becoming ever more frustrating. I found this book online and it sounded good. Ordered it, read it and found some great tips on how to approach the whole hearing issue with my Mom. Since reading the book, she's taken our recommendations to heart and is now wearing hearing aids. If people could hear her (literally) talk about the improvement in her quality of life since ordering hearing aids, people who suffer hearing loss would no longer ignore the amazing opportunity to hear life again. Thank you, Dr. Frantz, for sharing your wisdom and funny stories in this great book.

Saved me money

This book was quite helpful for me and my husband. Dr. Frantz has a warm conversational style and shares some personal insights. The book is easy to read and has many helpful hints on how to get hearing aids without spending a fortune. I would recommend it for anyone who thinks they may have hearing loss. It is a must-read before you go shopping for hearing aids.

Dr. Frantz does an outstanding job of describing how we hear and what can happen to cause hearing loss. He also discusses at length what to do if you think you may have hearing loss, what to do, which doctor you should contact, questions you should ask, how to get hearing aids, where to buy them, and even how to get a good deal while getting a good fit. The book was a quick, easy, informative read and I recommend it highly! I wish I lived closer to Dr. Frantz so I could make an appointment to have my hearing checked in his office.

If you are curious on how to prevent hair loss or balding, this is the most informative book you will ever read on the subject. The author gives out clear and concise strategies to help prevent hair loss and have fuller and thicker hair. The Definitive Book on an Astonishing Subject

Jung on Active Imagination is a compilation of C. G. Jung's writings on the particular discipline called "active imagination." This book is the definitive individual work on the subject. Jung developed the technique during the years immediately following his split with Freud. It is not, as some suggest, a meditative technique but a method of actively engaging the imagination in pursuit of contents generally hidden within the unconscious. The book's editor, Jungian analyst Joan Chodorow PhD, has done a marvelous job of assembling all the relevant material from Jung's collected works. Chodorow also provides a marvelous, twenty-page introduction for those not familiar with active imagination. This then is a book that will be of value to both the Jungian professional and the interested layman, such as myself.

Active Imagination in and of itself is a discipline wherein the practitioner, after securing a secluded place of relative isolation, clears away a space within the psyche and then actively watches for images and listens for voices that originate spontaneously. The practitioner then focuses on the images and/or voices and attempts to engage these psychic entities in dialogue. The intention is to encounter psychic entities that come from within the practitioner's subconscious. Jung recognized two different aspects of the unconscious. The first, he termed the shadow, which has its origin in the repressed, culturally unacceptable, portion of the ego. The second, Jung termed the collective unconscious, which contains the inherited archetypes of human existence that ultimately create civilization. When the practitioner encounters entities from either aspect of the unconscious, he/she allows the entity to retain its autonomy as much as possible.

Generally, the practitioner of active imagination does so under the supervision of a professional Jungian therapist, particularly if trying to resolve some emotional difficulty. The technique is not without its risks, particularly if the practitioner's emotional stability is questionable. Jung recommended having a supportive environment before undertaking such a project. The goal of active imagination is to build a functional bridge from consciousness into the unconscious, which Jung terms the "transcendent function." This allows the individual to function more as a whole person and not be blind-sided by contents from the unconscious during daily life. The outcome of such an endeavor is to become more of a whole person, or in Jungian terminology, the process should lead to "individuation."

A common complaint among practitioners is that they feel as if they are "making stuff up," that the psychic entity's portion of the dialogue is not autonomous but under the practitioner's intellectual guidance. Some professionals (e.g. Murray Stein) say that if they feel as though they are making it up, they probably are and should concentrate more on allowing psychic entities more autonomy. But others (see Robert A. Johnson's Inner Work, page 151) (Inner Work: Using Dreams and Active Imagination for Personal Growth) take a more relaxed approach to active imagination, saying that "making it up" is fine, that the content still comes from the unconscious anyway. In any case, active imagination is an extraordinarily interesting subject that might be well worth looking into.

Anyone interested in active imagination will undoubtedly come to wonder about Jung's own experience with it, and whether he documented his ordeal. And indeed, such a book does exist and has been published only recently. It's titled The Red Book, (The Red Book) and it contains Jung's original handwritten script in German as well as the text translated into English. But Jung on Active Imagination is the place to start.

For the past year, I have myself practiced a version of active imagination (using this book and others) in the hopes of developing techniques for authors to more intensely and reliably contact their source of creativity. I have called the project the Iris of Time. I've survived it so far and found that exploring active imagination has changed somewhat the nature of my dreams and has enabled me to contact strange psychic forces within myself that have changed not only my view of myself but also my view of what constitutes the "real world." Active imagination is an important subject, and if you have any inclination at all to learn more about yourself and the world in which you live, you might want to pick up a copy of this book.

I am a bit disappointed in the book. Not in its content or quality, but only because I already have these essays in other books that I have by C.G. Jung. That is the only reason why I give it three stars. I wish there would have been a table of contents that could be reviewed prior to purchasing the book, but at this time, there isn't.

Everyone should know Jung's work.

As it is the basis for many of the philosophies we have today. Here is the man who investigated the ancient eastern and shamanic philosophies, melded them with his own psychological observations, and changed the course of western thought. The concept of active imagination, a way of tapping creative intuition and allowing inspiration to become conscious, has been tremendously influential and has been endlessly copied and written about. This is the source, or rather, the man who did the most to make these insights respectable within the western tradition. Important and relevant for any creative persons, those involved in meditation, and anyone interested in such subjects.
