With self-love, life opens up like a beautiful flower, embracing you

I Heart Me is the greatest Valentines Day release, as without self-love, we have nothing to offer to another (except mutual dysfunctional sharing of wounded patterns). Hamilton delves deep into those sensitive places, using such profound sweetness and kindness, sharing his own tears and stories, and encouraging you to encompass your story. The book offers an opportunity to unearth buried emotional and mental beliefs, so that you can transcend them.

There is renewal once you begin to face your patterns, by travelling to the core memory and looking at how situations make you feel like you are right back there, responding as you originally did as a child. Hamilton is talented and wise, guiding you through every nuance, healing your mind and heart towards perfect functioning.

I found the chapter on shame highly useful. During the time I experienced childhood, shame was the number one tool used by parents, teachers and others in authority to force a child to behave. Children were taught to be ashamed of almost anything that was not in alignment to their parents wishes, often including simple needs at times that were inconvenient to their parents. The teaching really shares insights and tools to move beyond the false concepts, rather than enter into blame games.

Following the advice, one feels lighter, clearer, stronger and renewed.

There are so many valuable exercises shared, new levels of knowledge to integrate.

I have read so many wonderfully enlightening books lately, all preparing the way for fully understanding and assimilating this wonderful book by Hamilton. The author's humility made the opening of this path possible for those who are ready.

My personal favourite chapter is The Law of Personal Gravity. Hamilton suggests that we attract greater depth and quality of connection when we are authentic. Conversely, when we lack authenticity, we may find ourself surrounded by people that we feel uncomfortable around. Also, you may not be at ease with your own true self!

Hamilton continues to explain that authenticity equates and correlates directly to feeling good, making us more productive, insightful and creative, manifesting as success. All this, and more, is a gift of personal gravity, as events and opportunities are drawn unto us by the power of gravity.

Also worth reading is The Law of Personal Repulsion.The author explains how we unintentionally push away that which we would rather draw near to us. Also, that we do not need to be already living a perfect life to feel peace, rather this occurs through acceptance of our life as it is.

Following on, Hamilton advises us that we will continue to grow once we accept ourselves, infact more so, from a greater sense of self-worth. We will still experience challenges that stimulate growth, but we will have a healthy mind set with which to rise to meet such.

Self-Compassion is the topic for Chapter Ten, and includes many gems for your life toolbox. The author compares self-love, self-esteem and self-compassion. Self-esteem is dependant upon success, and so variable according to circumstances. Self-love includes self-compassion. How Hamilton describes true self-love may heal your life:-

When we have true self-love, when disappointment comes, we understand that it's OK. These things happen. We know we aren't a failure, it's just that something hasn't turned out quite right. We understand that we need support, kindness and compassion and that we're entitled to it. So we offer ourselves support and kindness, or even seek some extra in the arms of a loved one or friend, but we're doing so because we know that we deserve it. We are enough.

With self-compassion, disappointment is not nearly so painful. Self-compassion also helps us to extract our worth from our successes and achievements, reinforcing that we are enough. And when we're striving for a goal, it stops us judging ourselves as not enough right up until we achieve that goal.

Self-compassion also reduces stress-induced inflammation thus protects biology. This illustrates how powerful it is, as so many health conditions originate from biological inflammation. Hamilton states that self-criticism is self-inflammation. Loving kindness meditation can aleviate this over-reaction in the body. Tone down the inner harshness! Learn the benefits of striking a compassion pose (like a power pose).

From my grateful heart to yours - Thank You David Hamilton for this life changing book! I highly recommend this to anyone on their journey who has finally had enough and wants to be enough. I have waited 50 years for this well-written book that guides you and takes you to the Self-Love Gym to help you heal and learn how to love yourself so you can be free to live the life you want.

It was perfect for someone like me who has always been stuck between reality (science/fact) and spirituality (belief/faith) and wants to reprogram their negative "knowing" about themselves. The fact that he is a scientist and has lived this truth himself and willingly shares his own vulnerability, makes it that more potent and powerful. Plus, it feels like you have a close, non-judgmental, loving friend holding your hand and speaking just to you.

Very readable, well-written book, containing useful exercises on improving your self-love

David Hamilton is one of my favourite authors and the subject of this book is an important one – loving yourself. It is the basis of success in life and the ability to attract abundance. Love is the essence of the universe and we are at the centre of our universe. (This is my comment, not David's.)

The book has been blessed with a foreword by the amazing Anita Moorjani.

The book is well-written, which is a must for me, and very readable.

The author is completely open, honest and unguarded, and does not write the book from a stance of being further on on the path than ourselves, but confesses that it was difficult to write it, since he first had to do the work of learning how to love himself.

He recounts various situations from his own life when he came up short owing to a lack of a feeling of self-worth, but found strategies by which to overcome this feeling and these challenges.

We are introduced to David's Labrador puppy, Oscar, who “played a massive part” in his growth in self-love. Oscar gave David the gift of knowing he was worthy of love, and loved him so much it was impossible not to accept it. When Oscar passed on, David realized that Oscar had opened his heart so very wide that he had “a simmering affection” for everyone.

There are three stages in self-love. You are born full of self-love, but lose it gradually in the first six or seven years of your life. Then the lack of self-love becomes normal for you and becomes wired into your brain.

Stage 1 is feeling “I'm not enough”. Here David tells us of his time at school, where he was bullied. Stage 2 is “I've had enough” – had enough of being bullied, feeling small, feeling scared. He shares an episode about the time when, as an adult, he was holding a talk for a group of schoolteachers, and was bullied by five persons in the audience. He was just about to tell the bullies what he thought of them and leave, when the situation was resolved with the help of a young girl in the audience. David's stories are enlightening and entertaining.

Stage 3 is “I am enough”. At this stage we don't feel any need to prove our worth or agree with anyone, nor do we need people to like us.

A valuable part of the book is what David terms “The Self-Love Gym” – a series of exercises to increase our self-love. These exercises are sprinkled throughout the book.

Chapter Two deals with how we lose our self-love/sense of self-worth as children by being shamed, being criticized, and through observation. On reading this most of us will get flashbacks of painful episodes from our own childhood.

David teaches us how to use our body to change how we feel. We learn to fake it and make it – the Harvard Power Pose. We learn to put on a big smile and make ourselves bigger by adopting a “confident, 'high-power' posture. This pose produces confidence. A weak pose induces fear. It is a fact that how we function is affected by how we hold our body, Doing a power pose in your head will also have the same effect. When you stand as though you're enough, you will wire your brain networks.

The “I am enough” pose is one of the most valuable exercises in the Self-Love gym.

We learn the three rules of mental practice – Repetition! Repetition!, Repetition We learn to become a Self-Love Olympian by mental practice/visualization.

This is a great book, and it gets better and better. We learn about what the author calls “Extracting the I am” – noting a list of things we are ashamed of, and ending by transforming these into a positive ”I am” statement, e.g. I am intelligent, good with money or whatever.

We also learn David's celebratory dance, his victory dance. He calls this “Dancing the shame away”.

All this should be enough for you to get a good idea of the benefits offered by this book.

We all need more self-love, as self-love is the basis on which we can build a successful life. I strongly advise you to read this rewarding book penned by this articulate and lovable author.

a quick read with everything you need to know

I like this book. What frustrates me about the usual diet or "wellness" books is that they're either too complicated (very specific diets that you're never going to follow) or they border on the superstitious. Instead, this book breaks it down into four areas: stress, sleep, workout, and cooking.

It's very useful to look at these items on their own (so we can easily tackle them) but also how one can affect the other, i.e. how stress eating can lead to lack of exercise, and bad sleep. James asked his skinny friends what habits and tips they had to use weight. Some worked and some didn't, and he's arranged them into a complete system. It's not just bits or trivia here, everything fits and there's nothing too extreme.

For example, he shows how to stop stress eating by finding the root cause (anxiety or depression). How skinny people view cooking (building a skill, avoiding boredom, impressing the opposite sex). How to sleep better (and faster), make exercise fun. Get this book if you want "more" than an exercise book, "more" than a diet book, and "more" than a sleep and energy book.

I’M STUCK !!! STUCK BETWEEN THE PERSON I USED TO BE and THE ONE I WANT TO BE !!!

When I retired from my NY City civil service job in the beginning of 2010 after 33+ years of servitude I weighed 255lbs, the highest I had ever been. What do I want, I loved having my BLT on a toasted roll for breakfast and Subway Meatball Marinara hero with cheese or 4 fried chicken wings with pork fried rice /w extra onions and no bean sprouts or some other unhealthy stuff for lunch.

When I retired I made a commitment to myself and my dear OH to lose weight. I did. And by the beginning of December 2010 I had lost an amazing 45 lbs and was down to 210. But was then I had a massive heart attack and woke up in the CCU [Coronary Care Unit] about 11 days later. About 2 weeks later I had a quadruple bypass surgery along with a valve replacement and a maze procedure to help prevent AF [Aterial Fibrillation.]

By the time I left REHAB and went home a total of three months had passed and had now gotten down to 185 lbs. I had been relatively good at keeping the weight down for over 3 1/2 years and then slowly I gained it back. And now for about the last year I’ve been stuck at between 210 and 215, occasionally my weight goes down to 205 but I can’t seem to be able to get below that.

While the diet books I’ve read/reviewed so far have basically concentrated on giving its readers healthier options for recipes for the foods we all love to eat, Mr. Livingood’s book dwells more on the psychological and physiological reasons we eat the way we do. From surveying his friends who’ve successfully lost weight he saw a pattern of reasons for their success and then assembled his findings in an easy to read and understand format, which is what this book is.

After reading this book once I can already see what this book can offer me in my quest to reach my desired weight and I’m giving this book 5 STARS for doing this. All I have to do now is to re-read the sections which I feel apply quite a bit for where I am in my desire to lose weight. This book needs to read more than once to reap the most benefits from it.

"Valuable Advice From Someone Who Also Lost Weight"

I listened to the Audible audio version of this book.

THINK LIKE A SKINNY PERSON was such a great audiobook. It's written by someone who has actually lost 75 pounds. What this means to me is that this is someone who has experience and knows what they're talking about. This book was a gem. Also, this book would be good for anyone because I feel that the suggestions span more than just weight loss.

There were several places that I bookmarked such as how to deal with cravings, stress, and tricking your mind to sleep. Others include Pavlov's dog and random surprises of love. All great. Also, another thing I loved was geo cashing. What a wonderful idea.

Rebecca Roberts is such a fabulous voice actor. She narrated this book as if she were talking to you heart to heart. She has a warmth in her voice that resonates so beautifully. She made this an amazing listen.

Not just for beginners

I love this book. There's a combination of humor, practical insights and in-depth knowledge that the author does a wonderful job of communicating. The tone is a friendly one which makes me feel like I could really enjoy sitting sipping some wine with the author. She covers everything from historical trivia to the things someone needs to know to choose and enjoy wine. I loved the fact that the author emphasizes a "no judgement" approach to what readers enjoy in wine. The book covers all of the topics that someone needs to know to pick and enjoy wine in all kinds of situations. It was especially interesting to learn about some of the marketing practices behind the placement of wine in stores. I can recommend this read to those interested to diving deeper into their wine knowledge.

I'm very new to the wine world, being one of those people who don't know anything about wine... I just know what I like to drink. Janelle Jalbert's book is REALLY helping me to understand the ins and outs of it all, so I can drink what I like AND learn something about it in a fun and a simply instructive way. This book was a recommendation from a friend and I'm so happy I followed up with it. It's a down to Earth manual that gives me a step by step understanding of everything from how to buy wine, what tools to use, and what to eat with it. Thank you, Janelle, for writing something that is completely unpretentious and speaks to the simple folk... like me!

If your just getting into love of wine, this is the book to read. One I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. I love the humor and practical approach the author takes with the enjoyment of the wine experience. I loved how Janelle emphasized the key points throughout as I read through the chapters. This is a book I would recommend to my family and friends.

an empathetic psychoanalyst and client is the key to good psychotherapy. Helping the client
heal.

It’s not meant to be any of that – it’s simply meant to be an inspirational book, detailing a year in my life which happened to involve running. It covers why I took it up, what goals I set myself, what did I experience along the way, and what did I achieve at the end of it.

It's not a complex read, it's meant to be short, motivational, inspiring, fun, easy going - just how I like to be seen myself.

The end goal of the book isn't to encourage others to run; it's to share my experiences and to show that by setting goals, following the Churchill phrase "never, ever, give up", we can push limits and achieve things we might previously have thought impossible.

I want this book to give thanks to all those who have helped me along the way, and to in turn motivate and inspire other people.

a runners year

A Limey writes about his experiences as a runner over the course of about a year after taking up the sport. Fairly straightforward stories about his runs with ( to me ) impressive gains in speed and distance (5k to 50k). If he is an average runner in the UK I will never try to race one. No heroics, tragedy, or addiction involved. Prose can be choppy at times; its not art. If you want to hear and learn from other runners experiences there is something in this book for you.

I enjoyed the personal insight from this book. The author shares the good, the bad, and the ugly equally. It may not be ready for literary acclaim, but personal, honest introspection is a great purpose for the book. We all gain as people when we share our experiences. Well done.

Valuable and Practical Coping Skills for HSPs!

Building on Dr. Elaine Aron's research on Highly Sensitive People, Ted Zeff's book takes a practical "next step" for the HSP: Now that you *know* about the trait, how do you *manage* it, in an overstimulating world? I started reading this book on a flight from Texas to a convention in California, and discovered tips I could immediately apply to my situation at that moment.

The author starts with a general overview of the HSP trait-- including the sensitivity "self test" developed by Elaine Aron-- and then offers readers some guidance on how to make the best use of the book. Subsequent chapters deal with such topics as preparing for your daily life, dealing with time pressures, physical health, improving sleep patterns, coping with relationships, the work environment, and spirituality. The book concludes by answering some common concerns and questions asked by HSPs, as well as a section on choosing an appropriate healer from the helping professions.

Throughout, Zeff draws on a variety of relaxation and meditation techniques, as well as aspects of Eastern philosophy and spirituality helpful in minimizing and ending general pain and suffering. His overall tone is gentle, helpful and validating, and completely appropriate for a Highly Sensitive Person.

Useful Information for Highly Sensitive People

I read Elaine Aron's book, "The Highly Sensitive Person" which was

quite helpful, but I still didn't know how to cope with my sensitivity

in this harsh world. I work in a pressure cooker environment with so

much loud noise, deadlines and aggressive people, I'm wiped out at the

end of the day. I found the chapter on `Creating a Peaceful Work

Environment" a godsend. I immediately started employing the suggestions

in the book. I was scared to ask my boss if I could work part time from

home, but I followed Ted Zeff's suggestions on how to explain to others

about my HSP trait and finally got the courage to ask for a change. I'm

now able to work three half days from home and being out of that

intense office has made me feel more relaxed and able to cope better

with my job.

While the chapters on calming the senses, coping with time pressure,

maintaining a healthy body and nurturing the HSP soul were helpful, I particularly found useful the chapter on "Harmonious

Relationships for the HSP." My entire life I have been sensitive and

over-reacted to people who have teased me or treated me in an abrasive

manner. I've been following the book's different techniques to reduce

conflicts with people and have had some encouraging results. I'm

finding that I'm asserting myself more in a positive manner when people

have made hurtful comments. I used to be upset sometimes for days when

someone hurt my feelings. I'm feeling hopeful that I have some new

tools that seem to really work so I won't keep obsessing over people

who have hurt me.

I really enjoyed the supportive, yet humorous tone in which Ted Zeff

wrote the book making for easy reading. In the past I've had trouble

following too technical writing by professionals. If you are a highly

sensitive person, this book can really help you.

A Beginner's Guide

As a child, I was sent to my room as punishment for being "too sensitive" within my very stoic family. Looking back, I think I probably relished the time alone although I still remember the conflicting feelings of aloneness in not being understood, wondering why I so easily cried during a sad movie or other empathic inducements while others did not, wondering if there really was something wrong with me, etc. Later, in trying to eliminate all pieces of the sensitivity traits, I remained a bit different, regardless. Later still, I have found a good balance which simply comes from knowing and being true to yourself, knowing your strengths and limitations, saying "yes" to what would be good for you and learning to say "no" when need be. Good sense for anyone - highly sensitive or not.

The HSP (Highly Sensitive Person) is wired differently than most. Their nervous systems are more reactive and finely tuned, processing things - both positive and negative - more deeply. Also their brain wave patterns are more frequently in the theta state (near the state of meditation, open to intuitive feelings and able to pick up light, sound and other subtle vibrations easily) so truly they should be aware that their water glass holds more stimuli from sources that can become overwhelming and spilled over when not handled properly.

Maybe it's because I am an older HSP and have learned to adjust to the inherent traits, but I felt this book was not as beneficial as I had hoped. In addition, I felt many parts of "The Highly Sensitive Person's Survival Guide" focused on negative limitations instead of needed ways to transcend problems and troublesome situations.

Reading this book from a non-HSP's perspective, I viewed the HSP portrayed as being willfully temperamental, weak, fragile and needing to be coddled. I also felt they were singled out for possession of weaknesses not necessarily belonging to an HSP but could fit a broader population or sometimes anyone at all. A few examples are: "In some situations it can be useful to state that you have a finely tuned nervous system before you request that the person change their (annoying) behavior." (Yet the scenarios given would make anyone upset and it's doubtful that telling the offender that one is HSP, would help.) "The hospital and medical environment is quite emotionally challenging for the HSP." (I disagree.) "By the way, I don't think the song `I Could Have Danced All Night' was written by an HSP." (I disagree with the inference that an HSP doesn't have the physical stamina and/or that they may need a constant drone of boredom in order to survive.) References to "safe", quiet spaces, "inhospitable environment" and other innuendoes caused me to believe the inaccurate stereotyping that HSPs must be catered to due to their delicate natures.

"The Highly Sensitive Person's Survival Guide" is a great resource guide for any who need to learn how to take care of themselves, however. Written by Ted Zeff, PH.D., a psychologist who has taught stress reduction, insomnia management and also currently teaches workshops for HSP, "The Highly Sensitive Person's Survival Guide" is filled with very detailed methods of sensible and vital information and coping techniques for anyone wanting to reduce stress levels and live a calmer and healthier lifestyle. I especially enjoyed the "Nurturing The HSP Soul" chapter.

A definite must buy for anyone who does or who is interested in practicing yoga. Yoga is more than just a daily exercise, it's a practicing lifestyle that can change your outlook on life for the better. Everything that Sara Elliot Price has to offer in this book is beneficial in every sense of the word and has changed my outlook on things even as a experienced yoga enthusiast. 5 Stars!

Yoga as a way of life

The first thing that would come to mind when I hear about Yoga are those complicated-looking poses the supposedly promotes a healthier lifestyle. But when I read this book, I realized there is so much more to it. The author tackled what yoga is about and gave an in-depth discussion about its origins and schools.

I have learned that yoga is an art and is definitely a way of life. I really liked that part in book where the author stated that practicing yoga can help eliminate "afflictions". However, it does not mean that we will not experience sorrows anymore. Life still has its natural cycle of fluctuating emotions but yoga would help us find the inner peace.

Of course the best part is still the instruction guide on how to actually apply the different yoga positions. It would have been probably easier if there were illustrations so the readers would know if they did it right. Other than that, this book is a terrific companion for yoga beginners like me.

Finally a yoga book which simply and effectively explains many misunderstood aspects of yoga from prana breathing to asana postures and the 3 yoga types. It's an important aspect of yoga beyond exercise and movement that will help your yoga practice, here it is in a simple form for you. Highly recommend to anyone who is interested in yoga or has been taking yoga who wants to really better their practice.
