MY EXPERIENCE
What is it like to be suddenly, catastrophically on the verge of death?
I found out one morning when I was struck by a massive pulmonary embolism while walking. In the span of a single stride I went from being a healthy and vital to a person on the edge of death - gasping for breath - my life suspended by a thin thread of chance.
Having been brought to the threshold of oblivion and survived, how does one adjust to the prospect of living with a new understanding of the tenuous nature of existence?
The Next Breath and related website the-next-breath.org are dedicated to the exploration of this existential question.
MAJOR THEMES
Three themes run throughout The Next Breath
1. The Healing Journey - the stages of the recovery process are identified and described, e.g., PTSD, victimization, spiritual searching, winnowing, as are the emotions, such as denial, anger, depression, angst, fear, and vulnerability that ebb and flow like sine waves through the aftermath of the emergency and recovery from it.
2. Medical Decision-Making - the not always constructive interplay between the peculiarities of how contemporary medicine is practiced and patients' psychological and therapeutic needs in times of crisis is documented. In the process many issues that are in the public discourse are discussed: PTSD, medical errors, malpractice, deciding between conflicting medical opinions in life threatening situations, and the effect of meditation, if any, on recovery among others.
3. Fate - how chance dictates the course of our lives and how reacting to, perhaps accepting, the undirected nature of existence can affect the recovery and adjustment to a life-threatening event. The demonstration of the arbitrariness of existence leads to consideration of spiritual matters such as death and immortality, prayer, miracles, and the significance of NDE's as seen from the author's agnostic perspective.
WHERE THE NEXT BREATH FITS
The Next Breath offers a new perspective on the Near Death Experience (NDE) and Death and Dying literatures. Like Eben Alexander's Proof of Heaven the point of departure is a sudden, near fatal illness. However it is not another NDE story - I did not have one. I also have no religious axe to grind. Instead I had what might more aptly be called a Sudden Life Experience and the book focuses on the profound self-examination it initiated.
While The Next Breath takes inspiration from Elisabeth Kübler-Ross's work On Death and Dying and the stages of grief navigated by the terminally ill she identified, this book centers on the stages of recovery and rebuilding a life. It is a story of life and living vs. death and dying, therefore, of coming to terms with the possibilities of the future as opposed to the permanence of the past.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
With a doctorate in Sociology (Tufts University) and a Master of Public Health degree (Harvard University) Joe Fisher can speak to the topic of the consequences of life-threatening medical emergencies from a professional as well as personal perspective.
As the author of three books, as many book chapters and over 20 peer reviewed articles, his work has received praise from Publishers Weekly, The Miami Herald and the New England Journal of Medicine.

A Thought Provoking Look At Life After A Threatening Medical Emergency...

Author Joe Fisher is obviously a very intelligent man, well spoken and in command of the world around him... well until he went for a walk on the beach and suffered a pulmonary embolism or PE. Like many people after experiencing a life altering event, Joe's life becomes divided into two distinct parts... before the PE and everything that came after that caused him to reevaluate his entire perspective on life.
Joe takes us step by step through his experience as he fights for his rights as a patient, questions his doctors, suffers through rehab and begins to realize that his future limitations will be much more severe than he is prepared for. Suddenly he begins to question what life is all about and what happens when it all ends? On occasion the author comes across as a bit whiny and petulant, but overall his very detailed questioning of everything around him is exact and clearly presented which makes for thought provoking reading. By the end Joe admits to himself and his readers that even unwanted and unexpected life events can cause us to turn our focus inward and examine the state of our life, our relationships and the meaning of our journey here on earth.

I have known and worked with the author for approximately 30 years and have a good sense of who he is. This event has clearly had a decided impact on his outlook on life and the catharsis he experienced is fascinating and well documented in the book. The various twists and turns on the path to understanding and acceptance are sometimes surprising, but always enlightening.
Anyone who has, or knows someone who has experienced a significant life threatening event and struggled through a trying recovery, would be very interested in this book. The insight to be gained into the recovery process from the author’s experiences, the personal feelings involved and reactions to these are both fascinating and informative.
The book is an excellent read.

Given To Me For An Honest Opinion
The Next Breath: New Life After Near Death by Joe Fisher was written after Joe suffered a pulmonary embolism. The author discovers his outlook on life is not the same. Anyone who has experienced a health crisis or knows someone who has would be interested in this book. The author's experiences while going through treatment and rehab, his personal feelings and his reactions to it all are included and are quite informative. This would be a good book to add to anyone's bookshelf. I do recommend it to those who have an interest or are going through something similar. I look for more from Joe Fisher.
