Life with cancer was never more entertaining than this

Steve Dolling is a parent (husband, friend) who’s funny and outrageous, loving and persistent. He applies his narrative skills to this entertaining, endearing, and uplifting account of six years in the cancer trenches with his older son, Spencer. Steve’s comic timing is miraculous, and he has a gift for juggling several subjects at once to create layers of meaning. The family lifestyle--involving lots of aquatic adventure, a high-spirited dog, two smart and funny boys, and a loving marriage--inspires envy and awe. It's a great romp to read and heady inspiration for life well lived.
The short essays in I'll Shave My Head Too are grouped into three timespans of Spencer's illness. Written in the moment, they offer a vivid depiction of family life those six years. The result is not a tedious chronicle of illness. It's a highlight roll to blow you away. The format allows plenty of breaks to refill your glass or gaze out the window. This very sad story will rejuvenate you.

An amazing story

This is an amazing book. The story tells of a family's battle with cancer. It'll make you cry, but you'll laugh while you cry. It should be read by anyone who had dealt with cancer (i.e. everyone). Spencer and his family dealt with his illness in a direct, honest, but uplifting manner. Steve, Spencer's dad, doesn't hold anything back, but somehow he finds the humor in the experience of dealing with a horrible disease. It is a lesson on dealing with adversity. The writing style is like Rachel Remen's Kitchen Table Wisdom with many individual chapters that weave together the years of Spencer's life. This book might change you forever.

Steve is a master at capturing what all cancer parents think and feel... whether it is on the journey or upon reflection. Steve's ability to use humor as a tool to bring others to a place no parent would venture... is a gift. It provides comfort to those who have/had the same sentiments/journey and an insight into life as a cancer parent to those who are blessed to have skirted its circuitous path. Irony.... a vehicle .... a metaphor... a synonym for.... "LIFE!"
