START HERE to learn all you need to know to get started with this topic!

Hearing is a BIG topic in my family, four generations worth. My Great Grandmother & Grandfather both had severe hearing loss - one from Diabetes, one from having worked on the noisy railroads all his life. So through every generation thereafter, we learned to watch for diabetes, and prevent it; watch for eye problems and prevent them; and of course, watch for hearing problems as well.
This easy to ready "seminar in book form" I was able to read in a matter of minutes, saving me hours and hours of research, and more importantly, answering questions that I really did have but didn't realize I had, such as: how loss of hearing registers in your life, or how hearing products are priced, and what kind of options there are, and so on.
This simple handbook will save you hours of stress and seeking answers in all the wrong places! I highly recommend this book as not only a "hearing saver" but a time saver as well.
Moreover, Mr. Shaw is an expert in the field, yet writes as if he's having a chat with you over coffee. You cannot mistake the care and concern he has for your personal quality of life, which includes your ability to hear, and have appropriate interative relationships.

Wonderful book. If I had this information 2 years ago I would have saved time and money.

Thank you so much for writing this very informative book. My mother is 93 years old and resisted getting hearing aids for a long time, all because a friend once told her, more than 20 years ago, that they are more trouble than they are worth. I finally convinced her a couple of years ago to at least try. We purchased from a licensed hearing center and they always seem to work fine in the quiet setting of the audiologists office but much less well at home. She is often unable to follow a TV program no matter how loud the volume. After reading this book I now realize that the aids are likely not the right type for her and are too small. I think she would benefit from the larger more powerful aids, as described in the book. Until now I did not understand the options available and the fact that the tiny aids she has now largely hide their presence is really not an issue for her. We will be returning to the audiologist and exploring larger more powerful aids. Thanks again. Chris Watson, Los Angeles.

Tom Shaw is one heck of a fine man. His book is a simple introduction to hearing impairment and the solutions via hearing aids. What I found valuable was his step-by-step guide to finding out the severity of impairment, and the subsequent procedures one would most likely undergo to address the problem and choose the correct hearing aid. Probably the most valuable chapters are the ones on choosing a dispenser or an audiologist, and on cost. People need to be aware of how they're going to pay for their device(s), and the fact that Medicare rules have disallowed payment coverage without some sort of additional private insurance protection. I would advise anyone who is facing diminished hearing to read this book to get an adequate "feel" for what will be a serious commitment to alter one's life and that of their family and friends. Kudos to Tom on his very caring and experienced presentation!
