Hope for the diabetic (as well as the rest of us)

I do not have diabetes nor am I pre-diabetic. However, I am aware of two facts that made me want to read this book. First, many people suffer from Type Two Diabetes and are greatly in need of a diet that will reverse their diabetes. Second, if the diet contributes to overall health, then it is one worth considering, even if one is not diabetic.

Sanjay Raghavan, the author, was diagnosed with diabetes. Rather than go the common route of taking medication to control his diabetes, he decided to study the issue and see whether he could find a way of reversing his diabetes through diet and exercise. This book represents the fruit of his labors. Thoroughly researched and encyclopedic in scope, the book presents a diet and exercise program for those who have diabetes or are pre-diabetic.

Beginning with a review of the basics, in which he explains what diabetes is and how it affects the body, Sanjay goes on to look at various popular diets (such as the Atkins diet, the Paleo diet, and others), explains them, and rates them. None of them turn out to be maximally satisfactory in dealing with diabetes.

Having done this, Sanjay explains glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) and then introduces his healthy choice (HC) rating of various foods. This rating forms the basis of the HC diet, which he explains over the next several chapters. Without getting into the details, the HC diet is one that emphasizes fresh vegetables and fruits, as well as legumes, and limits the intake of dairy, meats, and refined grains. Sanjay is realistic enough to know that not everyone will be able to keep this diet to perfection, and so he allows for an occasional bit of "cheating" (so long as it is occasional and does not become a habit). As part of his discussion of the HC diet he provides the reader with a sample 7-day meal plan.

Following this is a discussion of natural supplements, such as chromium, magnesium, and vitamins B6 and B12. He discusses why these minerals are important to health and especially for those who are diabetic, and he lists foods that are high in these minerals.

The last section of text discusses the importance of exercise and why it is important to start an exercise program. This is a chapter everyone should read, even those who have not been diagnosed as diabetic. The book closes with a list of online resources followed by quite a few tasty recipes that are consistent with a HC diet.

Interesting, informative and a potential game-changer!

I know Sanjay (the author) personally and I have seen him go through the trials and tribulations of being diabetic. Ever since his blood sugar levels went high, he decided to take matters into his own hands. I can only assume he spent the next hours, days and months researching on ways to rid himself of this disease. Because whenever I used to meet him, he would tell me interesting facts and anecdotes about how glycolysis works, how currently existing "extremist" diet plans could be harmful in the long run, how USFDA's recommended daily value of nutrients may be skewed one way or another and so on. Sanjay was (and still is) of the belief diabetes and obesity are two sides of the same coin and that with a good balanced diet and regular exercise, they could be reversed. I nodded encouragingly and moved on, thinking that his pursuits were too fantastical to work.

But when I met him a few months later, he was a changed man. He was fitter than I had ever seen him before and his blood sugar dropped back (and consistently retained) to normal levels. I was pleasantly surprised. And I naturally assumed that he would've gone on a ridiculous crazy diet chewing only on raw leaves of some sort. I was even more surprised to see him eat pretty much the same Indian diet that I'm used to eating - Dosas (rice crepes), Rotis (wheat tortillas), Fruit Smoothies and what not. There just has to be a catch, right?

The curiosity in me drove me to read this book that Sanjay was putting together. How did he really manage to do it? When I got my hands on the book, I devoured it in just a couple of days. And then I understood the secret. There was no catch. It was just a matter of putting in a conscious effort to understand the foods that you eat, how they are received and processed by your body and how can you pick the right foods that work for you. And putting that conscious effort to learn what foods are best for you is hard, especially in this world of I-will-sell-you-crap-because-I-want-to-make-money capitalists and I-will-give-you-my-magic-potion trolls on the internet.

In this book, Sanjay has done a great job in researching and collecting a corpus of vetted information about the different types of foods, the nutrients in them and how they can be correctly balanced in your diet. With that characteristic flair of a good narrative non-fiction writer, Sanjay presents these facts along with witty comparisons and personal anecdotes that make this fun, yet informative read. While the first part focusses on existing diets, facts and shunning common misconceptions (I really liked the jabs he takes at fast-food joints :P) ; in the second part, Sanjay presents a diet (which he cutely names HC - Healthy Choice) plan based on the facts mentioned previously. The diet is actually pretty impressive. Though I'm not a diabetic, I'm very tempted to try out his diet. Since it's focussed on fruits, vegetables and legumes (caveat: it's not a meateatarian diet, but hey, if you want to get healthy, you should probably think about not eating bacon) it can only be healthy for anyone. And surprisingly enough his diet seems to dispel the age-old myth that healthy food by-definition cannot be tasty. Turn your pages to the appendix, then you'll know what I mean. I had to stop reading it because it made me hungry.

I give this book 5 stars because of three main reasons :

1. I've seen Sanjay's diet in action and I've seen it perform well. I do understand that every human being is different and has different tastes, but since this diet works (from what I see) and is tasty (at least for me), it's worth a shot!

2. Diabetes and obesity are serious problems. I know several family members who suffer from this disease and are having a tough time dealing with repercussions. Popping pills for the rest of your life is not a great solution either. If you are suffering from diabetes or know someone suffering from diabetes, the book is worth a read because it provides a viable strategy.

3. Most importantly, the book is written well. I cannot stand reading a boring, preachy work of non-fiction. I'm glad this isn't one of those. I found this book satisfying my intellectual curiosity (I finally understand the relationship between insulin, glycolysis, glycemic indices and sleep cycles) and would recommend to anyone who wants to teach themselves more about this domain.

It's working for our family

I'm not diabetic or pre-diabetic. However, I have a quite a bit of tummy fat and have never been able to lose my post pregnancy weight no matter no hard I worked out or how less I ate. I then tried the healthy choice diet for 1 month (cheating twice a week or so), and it is working for me!!! Not just for me, but my husband too.

It's no miracle, but if you know what you are ingesting, knowing the nutrients and how to make it a balanced meal- it will work. Not overnight but over time. A good side effect-I am able to sleep better and have more energy during the day:)

Luckily, I'm a vegetarian and so it's easy for me to follow this. AND it's not ingesting leaves and twigs. Every meal is as good as you can make it to be- get creative and enjoy.
