About the Author
D. Preston Smith, MD, FAAP, FACS, FSPU graduated from Rice and the U of Texas Medical School, completed his Urology Residency at Northwestern and a fellowship at the LeBonheur Children’s Hospital. Are you kidding? This is the best potty training guide ever!

I wish I were paid to write this, but I'm not. I'm glad this book is short and to the point (someone said pamplet?) No need to go on & on & repeat yourself like most books. I also like that the author has 3 approaches to training that are equally viable. As a cloth diapering mom I too am like the older generation of parents who had an incentive to train "early". After being elbow deep in cloth diaper poop for most of a year, what is a little pee and poop on the floor on occasion? It's easier to clean tile than a diaper. I think that "poop-o-phobia" many mom's have is a top reason many children train late. When children can maintain awareness by having cloth and feeling wetness and also being able to see it on the floor, and seeing where the adults in the house put theirs, they make the connection and want to copy.
With the help of this book and "infant potty training by Laurie Bouke" my 16 month old son is 95% accident free in the day - including car rides -, wears a diaper for naps and at night and rarely poops in his diapers anymore and he is 16 months old. When he's in the same room with us (hotel room), he'll even wait for us to take him after naps and in the morning. We wake him before we go to bed to potty. I think this method is great because you as a parent take responsibility to maintain awareness, wait for opportunities and can back off and try again in a few months if it's not working out.
I tried "infant potty training" and it worked until he was 8 months old, but my son regressed when he began to crawl and we relearned with these techniques again when he was 14 months old. Great topics I'll highlight are Bowel & Sphincter functions, The resistant child and setbacks. I knew my child had awareness when as an infant he'd go more than an hour with a dry diaper, and when walking barebutt, at 13 months he could hold it for over 3 hours. He had the opposite problem of many kids... knowing when to let go. Once we established better places to let go, when bare butt than on the floor, it was a breeze! When he learned the meaning of and could say "uh oh and "oh no", is when it clicked for us. Having him help clean up messes was also helpful. Also getting a piece of TP to put in the toilet worked as a reward for him since other than that moment it was out of reach for him. I'll also mention that my son is 16 months but the size of a 4 year old with grown man sized poops. I love to hear him sing "potty" when he has to go :-) one of the few words he says. I also love the potty watch you can get here on amazon. Potty Watch Toilet Training Aid ~ Green Band Awful reviews but if you can get one that works it is priceless in reminding you to take them to potty if you use one of the techniques in this book. Amazon return policy is great so worth trying until you get one that works. I recommend getting good batteries for them.

This book is okay, but seems like mostly common sense type stuff. Our daughter had a UTI about six months into potty training and our Ped jumped the gun a bit and sent us to a Ped Urologist. The Urology Nurse Practitioner informed us that this is quite common and to read this book, put a stool under her feet when she's going and use a potty ring. The stool and potty ring were the only things I learned while reading the book!
