These titles indicate only partly aspects of the method. The fundamental assumption of "Body Cognition" is that the right movement is beneficial to our physical and mental well-being. Learning the right movement can considerably facilitate the solution of a long series of prevalent bodily problems.

This book is the ID of the method: an attempt to explain extensively, present reasons arguments and demonstrate its theoretical aspect as well as display its practical implementation. "Slow is the fastest way" is Michaeli's motto, and the word "slow" resonates over and over in the studio. "The quick work covers problems, and people have a tendency to hurry," says Michaeli. "When a person gets used to working slowly he will overcome the tendency to hurry, and will gain something that is beyond the body. Contrary to other methods, we preach not to reach the end of a movement range but rather to leave a reserve. This way we did not harm the body and reached further. Instead of fighting the body we are being friendly to it. You can apply this to other areas in life".

Michaeli's third book "Body Cognition: the Method," has been recently published (Hargol/Am Oved) and its goal is to present the method, that has been difficult to define from the get go. There were those who wondered if it's an exercise, or perhaps a treatment for all sorts of back problems. Michaeli diligently wrote this book over the course of a few years. The book, which explains in a flowing and friendly manner about the method and its premise, also comes with a DVD containing three sample lessons, filmed by Nili Aslan, a cinematographer who is now also a therapist using the method. The author, Yehoshua Kenaz has been practicing the Body Cognition method since 1984. This week he praised Michaeli's book. "After reading it, I understood the meaning of the things we've been doing in the lessons for all those years." He first came to the studio although nothing was troubling him. The author Benjamin Tamuz recommended the method and Kenaz was curious, liked it, and for 25 years now he has been attending twice a week. "This method inspires a pleasant sense of confidence in the body", he says. "I compare what we do in Yosefa's lessons to a sentence that is formed by a word and another word, and another word, and in the end an entire narrative meaning is derived".

not smooth reading for the layperson

I’ve had poor posture and suffered from migraines and other aches for some time. I’ve always believed that good posture is important to health and looking good. I’ve sought exercises and ways of improving my posture and getting rid of my rounded shoulders. I recently read Body Cognition— The Method by Josepha Michaeli looking for ideas to help.

As a layperson, found that this book seems to be intended for professionals or those involved with bodywork. At times, I felt this verbose, jargon filled book was over my head. It reads like a textbook for practitioners or students planning to enter the field. It is packed with information about human anatomy and the body’s functioning. After the first chapter, I realized that the practical exercises, movements, and information about implementing the method that I sought probably would not be found here. The book covers lots of the whys regarding the need for body cognition, but lacks much of the hows. The book did reinforce my belief that the body does work as a machine, and if part of it is off then it doesn’t work at its optimum level. My key problem is that I work at a desk in a sedentary job, and prolonged immobility and continuous, monotonous actions are bad.

In closing, I will say that I was disappointed, as this book was not what I had hoped. I received a copy of the book in return for providing a review, otherwise I probably would not have continued reading the book past the first few pages. It’s not necessarily a bad book, just not a book meant for me.

Think about yourself, think about your body.

We read this very interesting and important book with a kind of admiration to the one who wrote it and to the many who practice according to it, thus keeping their health, both mentally and physically.
The idea of using the cognitive processes in order to approach the body sounds original, innovative and challenging. We found it very practically and implementable practice to treat the body and to maintain daily physical training. Ideas about the relationships between our cognitions and our body are focused on our physically daily life. After reading the book we found how much that focus is generally neglected. Our corporal aspects are the most important mechanisms which enables us to manage our life. The book is full of lessons, guidelines, and comments, which enlighten how we can improve those mechanisms and how we can keep our body as a good machine which supposed to serve us forever.

The true connection between mind and body

This book broadens our mind and body.
Body Cognition method teaches us to reach a balance, according to our constant changing needs. The exercises enrich the variety of movements and broaden the range of muscle and joint movements, particularly those deprived. Body Cognition educates us towards a correct movement instinct in our ongoing conduct which continues well outside of the lessons – in the real world fraught with stress.
Highly recommended!
