Creepiness, by Adam Kotsko

A specter is haunting contemporary television—the specter of creepiness. In our everyday lives, we try to avoid creepiness at every cost, shunning creepy people and recoiling in horror at the idea that we ourselves might be creeps. And yet when we sit down to watch TV, we are increasingly entranced by creepy characters. In this follow-up to Awkwardness and Why We Love Sociopaths, Adam Kotsko tries to account for the strange fascination of creepiness. In addition to surveying a wide range of contemporary examples—from Peep Show to Girls, from Orange is the New Black to Breaking Bad—Kotsko mines the television of his 90s childhood, marveling at the creepiness that seemed to be hiding in plain sight in shows like Full House and Family Matters. Using Freud as his guide through the treacherous territory of creepiness, Kotsko argues that we are fascinated by the creepy because in our own ways, we are all creeps.

This is a very good book. It is written in a genial and engaging style, and makes a contribution to the philosophical literature on Freud's difficult concept of the "unheimlich" or "uncanny," while avoiding the more familiar terrain of the "philosophy of horror." As with the other books in this trilogy, the author seeks to map current ideological conditions by asking not so much why it is that we like to watch creepy things (or sociopathic antiheroes, or awkward varieties of comedy), but why ONLY these extreme figurations excite us enough to command our ever-more-divided attention. As with ZIzek's best work, the point is not simply a virtuosic set of close readings and digressions (although one finds those here, too), but the more focused effort to take a snapshot of capitalist mentality as it congeals around a certain set of attachments and fantasies. A rewarding text.

Emptiness
By gentle reader
I am not usually one to malign someone's efforts at cultural criticism, but this book was such a bait and switch that I feel moved to inform the populace -- and, perhaps, the author. The lead essay, published online at The New Inquiry, drew me into this apparently fun premise. But the book-length effort, sadly, falls far short of this shined-up article on the cultural significance of Burger King's "Creepy King" mascot. The stakes of this effort are low-hanging fruit -- "creepiness" (a usefully empty signifier) in American popular television. The prose itself is riddled with moments of creepiness -- self-congratulation; clumsy, modifier-ridden diction; repeated gratuitous references to "my girlfriend" (who cares?). Sample: "He ultimately succeeds in slitting his wrists in a very graphic scene that feels jarringly out of place in the Wes Anderson universe" (101). Frederic Jameson this is not, and I cannot actually imagine that Slavoj Zizek (who improbably reviewed this title) actually read it. Two stars for the "Creepy King" essay, zero stars for the rest, and I will not be hitting up Adam Kotsko or Zero Books in the future.
