USE DEPRESSION RESOURCES BY MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS

I had to revise my original writeup after doing a 5 minute Internet search on depression. Heather Rose has not "written" a book about the topic. She has copied off of an MD website (like WebMD)--not verbatim but in content and overall layout and information.

There is a ton of highly reliable information on depression on the web that can be read for free or excellent book resources such as:

1) THE DEPRESSION CURE by Stephen Ilardi, PhD. (57 5-STAR RATING),
2) THE MINDFUL WAY THROUGH DEPRESSION by Mark Williams, PhD. John Teasdale, PhD. Zindel Segal, PhD. and Jon Kabat-Zinna, PhD. (109 4.5-STAR RATING),
3) UNDOING DEPRESSION by Richard O'Connor, MSW, PhD. (119 4.5-STAR RATING,
4) OR your get the idea. This is too serious an issue to rely on a layperson's opinion and/or inaccuracies and incomplete data.

DEPRESSION SELF HELP: 7 QUICK TECHNIQUES TO STOP DEPRESSION TODAY! does include seven ways a person can help themselves decrease and/or eliminate symptoms--in the final chapter. The rest of the book covers a chapter each on depression's definition, causes, types, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment.

HOWEVER, there were critical elements that qualify as general information that were totally absent.

1) There was not enough information provided to distinguish general depression from bipolar. Yes there are depressive symptoms present during periods of time, but there is also the other end of the spectrum present during other periods, such as euphoria in mood, excessive energy, irritability, lack of sleep, talking excessively, impulsivity, etc.

2) Surprisingly, Rose did not even mention suicidal thoughts or suicide attempts--which can be the most detrimental symptoms present. Here again, there is a list of indicators to be evaluated that are not listed. Anyone with suicidal thoughts should be encouraged to immediately contact their physician or the suicide prevention hotline.

3) Another oversight is in the area of diagnosis. Rose leaves it up to a general practitioner to eliminate physical contributors to diagnose depression, which is misleading (and only something an MD website would promote). Mental health professionals such as psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, social workers, or therapists are equally valid resources for making a diagnosis, although they will go about making the determination through a different means, i.e., a combination of some or all of the following components: client background, questionnaire, initial interview, and psychiatric testing.

Lastly, the data which speaks to the title of this book represents 69 percent of the overall book. The remaining 31 per cent promotes Roses's other books for sell. This kind of thing makes me really angry for legitimate writers and professionals who labor over their books seeking to deliver unique, relevant, complete material in a quantifiable amount. This book was just cranked out to generate money.

I would NEVER recommend it to anyone with a mental illness.

I really like this book. It gives 7 healthy ways to MANAGE depression. Depression is a mental illness. It is a chemical imbalance in the brain. So yes of course eating right and exercising is going to help but these wont cure it. I need medication and therapy and to eat right and exercise and the other things mentioned in this book. But I know that there is no cure yet. It is like cancer. You can die from it. (suicide) you can go into remission, but for me it is recurring. So please talk to your Dr. before stopping any medication!!! And since this book suggests you stop taking your meds and that this is the cure, I would NEVER recommend it to anyone with a mental illness.

This book “7 Quick Techniques to Stop Depression Today”, written by author Heather Rose, is an approach about how to understand this illness, what is it, what causes it, types of depression, symptoms of depression, prognosis and treatment.

According to the author, depression affects 1 in 10 people all over the USA. It’s one of the most common of mental illness and one of the easiest to treat. According to the CDC, the most likely of people to suffer with depression are: People from 45 to 64 years of age, women, the ones who are unable to work or are unemployed, the ones who have been previously married and the ones without health insurance coverage.

As a way to treat this illness, the author has proposed a 7 Quick Techniques as follows:

(1) Cultivate Relationships That Support You.
(2) Get Yourself a Pet
(3) Challenge Those Negative Thoughts
(4) Take Care of Yourself
(5) Exercise Regularly
(6) Eat a Healthy Well Balanced Diet
(7) Help Others

As in any other sensible topic, you should perform further research in order to reach a better understanding of this illness and its treatment.
