Traditional yoga theory offers fresh, insightful solutions to today’s practical lifestyle concerns, ranging from environmentalism to personal health and wellness. The second half of the book focuses on the yamas and niyamas, the personal disciplines and social ethics of yoga. Throughout, Dr. Jois’ teachings honor ancient traditions and underscore the benefits we can gain from adopting a yogic way of life in the modern world.

A hoard of yogic knowledge
By D. Seward
This book is an absolute treasure trove of practical insight and advice for any yoga practitioner. After an introduction that describes the book's philosophical foundations, the meat of the text comprises Dr. Jois expounding on the Yamas and Niyamas as presented by Patanjali (5 each) and in the Yoga Yajnavalkya (10 each, with some overlap). He distills experience and scripture to arrive at an accessible and comprehensive model for personal conduct that supports a successful yoga practice. What makes this such a valuable read is the way Dr. Jois relates these directives to a modern life. This won't surprise the astute person who read the subtitle, but the book succeeds admirably in its approach.

More than anything else, The Sacred Tradition of Yoga is an encouraging and hopeful book for someone who finds the classic yogic texts appealing but hard to relate to our crazy world. The knowledge inside is delivered via an individual who has experienced Samadhi and knows the path to get there. Dr. Jois firmly asserts that the full yogic experience is accessible - even natural - for all people on this earth. While adjourning to a cave to meditate all day may be the fastest route for some to Realization, for most of us this is not an option. But this doesn't mean that we can't nurture a fruitful yoga practice, or move in the direction of balance and bliss.

There are, admittedly, some disconnects between the modern yogic life that Dr. Jois espouses and the reality of living in a hectic Western society. But the spirit of his descriptions are easily accessible; when something in this text seems to be too hard to accomplish, I have generally been able to construct a watered-down version that would be applicable to my current day-to-day life in Manhattan. This book presents ideals: comprehensible and probably achievable missives for leading a better, more virtuous life.

Even if someone worked for years and was unable to find Samadhi, by following these practical presentations of Yamas and Niyamas, most people would end up happier and more satisfied with their time than without. And maybe that's the whole point of yoga as a spiritual discipline, anyway.

To wrap up, here are the Yamas and Niyamas as presented within the book, which will look different to those who are only familiar with Patanjali's Yoga Sutras.
Yamas - External practices (how one relates to the world at large) and supporting disciplines
- Ahimsa (Nonviolence)
- Satya (Truthfulness)
- Asteya (Nonstealing)
- Brahmacarya (Moving toward the Eternal Truth [an unconventional translation!])
- Aparigraha (Detachment from Possessions)
- Daya (Mercy)
- Arjava (Straightforwardness)
- Ksama (Resilience and Tolerance)
- Dhrti (Determination and Tenacity)
- Mitahara (Measured Food)

Niyamas - Internal practices (how one relates to their own person) and supporting disciplines
- Sauca (Physical Cleanliness)
- Santosa (Contentment)
- Tapas (Austerity)
- Svadhyaya (Study of the Self)
- Isvara Pranidhana (Surrender to the Eternal Truth)
- Astikya (Faith)
- Dana (Offering)
- Hrihi (Moral Conscience)
- Mati (Intellectual Confidence)
- Japa (Chanting)
- Vrata (Self-Discipline)
- Siddhanta Sravana (Listening to the Truth)

True Yoga
By Kyle Mercer
Having studied with Dr. Shankaranarayana Jois for a number of years now I am so pleased to have his work and understanding in book form. As always, I have a deep feeling that this information is direct from the source and as the title says the sacred tradition un-diluted. The information in this book is interesting, accessible and very understandable. Dr. Jois includes personal and traditional stories to illustrate and help us connect with the information.
Dr. Jois is a consummate scholar and yogi, his commitment to restoring traditional yoga to India and sharing it with the west is of huge service in a world where we are losing much of what makes us human. These practices are very practical and fundamental to how we connect and live in the world in even the simplest ways.
Yoga in the west has become much like gymnastics in so many places, perhaps this book will help to bring the tradition back to the fundamental meaning, purpose and practice as it was intended. As a practitioner there is so much to be gained on many levels through these ancient, practical, potent understandings. If you practice any form of yoga or are interested in getting to the truth of who we are read and share this book.

As suggested in the title - this book offers wonderful knowledge taken from ancient tradition and places it in a modern context, easily accessible to Western readers. These teachings have helped me to find happiness and confidence in my life as a parent, husband, and working professional. After many years experiencing the physical asana practice, this book has opened my mind to the comprehensive life system offered by Yoga. Much gratitude to Dr. Jois for sharing this with us.
